Over 80 businesses attended a Skills Fair in Carlisle this week, which was hosted and organised by local MP John Stevenson.
A wide range of local employers were in attendance, including sponsors The Cumberland, Persimmon Homes and Pladis (better know to us as McVities / Carrs), and local businesses and organsisations such as Nestle, Pirelli, Komatsu Forest Ltd., North West Ambulance Service, BAE Systems and Barclays Bank, to name but a few.
Hundreds of students and local residents dropped by the event, to talk with employers, and education and training providers about current and future careers and how to go about being successful in gaining these opportunities.
The MP’s Skills Fair was the 10th of its type, and comes as John Stevenson continues to deliver on his pledge for Carlisle to deliver more and better jobs, and improve vocational, education and skills training.
Commenting on the event, John said, “My 10th Annual Carlisle Skills Fair has been the best and the busiest one yet. We have had employers join us from right across Cumbria meeting with local people who are looking for work and the next steps to a career of their choice. I want local people to have the opportunity to access the jobs of the future. No longer do young people in particular, have to move away to gain that dream job.
Work starts on the organisation of the Skills Fair six months before it takes place, so thank you to everyone who attended and all who have helped to make the event a success. See you all next year!
Tony Ferguson from Dodd & Co. Accountants said “Dodd & Co were delighted to be supporting the Carlisle skills fair again this year as we have for each of the previous nine years. It’s fantastic to be involved in such a wonderful showcase of opportunity for the young people of Carlisle and the surrounding areas which demonstrates just how many different options and career routes are available right here in Cumbria.”
Student N from Newman School said “I really enjoyed the Skills Fair. It was great to meet employers in person and talk about employment and training opportunities when I finish school. I came home energised and full of ideas!”
