The requirement of a modern economy is to ensure that those in work have the right skills. If our city and country is to be competitive it needs to ensure that our businesses have access to people with the skills necessary to ensure that they can innovate and compete in an ever increasingly competitive world.
– and that is the principal reason for continuing with Carlisle Skills Fair.
After the Election and having hosted the Skills Fair for the last 10 years, I did wonder if I should continue with it. Would there be the same level of interest? After some thought, I put out feelers to test the appetite for an 11th Carlisle Skills Fair.
To be honest, I was taken aback by the response and enthusiasm which was unequivocal and a resounding yes.
The college was more than happy to host the event and provide the wonderful lunch which is prepared by the catering students. Inspira were engaged, as was the job centre.
However, like all events, funding is required – no problem – Pladis, Persimmon Homes, Cumberland Building Society, Borderbite and all the skills providers were all up for it.
Would the businesses respond? Again, a fantastic response and to date we have over 70 companies committed to the event on the 23rd of January 2025. Indeed, there are now only a limited number of places left.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the organisations who have committed to support the Carlisle Skills Fair. The original idea came out of a political activity, but it has now gone beyond politics. It is a fixture that actually brings real benefit to individuals, business and the city – we must never forget – skills really do matter.
